ATO - Employee or Contractor - Workers with ABN's
Monday, 09 May 2016 09:51

An ABN makes no difference to whether a worker is an employee or contractor.

When you hire a worker, forget the common myth that they’re a contractor simply because they have an ABN.

Your worker could have an ABN for a number of legitimate reasons, but this makes no difference to whether you should treat them as an employee or contractor.

When it comes to tax and super, working out if your worker is an employee or contractor is based on the terms and conditions of their working arrangement with you. It's important to get it right because your tax and super obligations can change based on those arrangements.

So how do you get it right with your workers?

  • Employee/contractor decision tool
Use our Employee/contractor decision tool to get a quick and reliable answer. The tool will tell you if your worker is an employee or contractor for tax and super purposes and what this means for your business.
  • Webinar
Register for our free Employee or contractor webinar to help you understand your obligations in more detail – the sessions are interactive if you have questions you’d like to ask.

Office Fair Trading - Consumer Law Review
Wednesday, 13 April 2016 14:10

Have you say on the Consumer Law Review

Review of the Australian Consumer Law

On 1 January 2011, the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) came into effect as a single, national consumer protection and fair trading law. For businesses, the ACL governs business operations and obligations to consumers. For consumers, the ACL enshrines in law basic marketplace rights, including the right to a refund for faulty goods, the right to not be misled by advertising and the right to be protected from unfair contract terms.

A review of the ACL is now underway. The review will consider whether the law is operating as intended, how well it is being enforced, and whether it can respond to new and emerging consumer issues. The review is also your chance to have a say on consumer law issues.

An Issues Paper was released on 31 March 2016 and consultation is open until 27 May 2016. Feedback is encouraged on any or all of the issues raised in the Issues Paper, as are suggestions about other ways to improve the ACL.

A series of stakeholder consultation events are scheduled in a number of locations around Queensland.

You are encourage to review the Issues Paper and participate in the stakeholder consultation event closest to you. You can access a copy of the Issues Paper and the schedule of consultation events on the Office of Fair Trading website.

Feedback on the Issues Paper must be received by Friday 27 May 2016.

Free Patient Transfer Bus Between South Burnett & Toowoomba
Monday, 11 April 2016 15:37

New Hospital Bus Kingaroy to Toowoomba

Member for Nanango, Deb Frecklington has been lobbying for better access to health services for our community for many years, and in particular, has been working with the Kingaroy Hospital and the Darling Downs Health Board to provide a solution for people who need to travel to Toowoomba Hospital for treatment. That’s why Deb Frecklington is extremely pleased that the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Board have started a free patient transfer bus service between the South Burnett to Toowoomba. This shows that having a local health board, with people who understand our regional situation, can achieve common sense solutions which are going to really help our community. This is a terrific result that will make a big difference in people’s lives. Deb Frecklington would particularly like to thank Board Chairman, Mr Mike Horan and the Board Members for their ongoing commitment to improving health services in the South Burnett, and South Burnett Cluster Operations Manager, Ms Peta Rutherford for helping to get the bus up and running.
