Running a small business often means wearing many different hats, constantly making decisions, working through a never-ending to-do list and carrying a level of responsibility that doesn’t switch off at 5pm. Over time, this can drain your energy, focus and wellbeing.

Imagine approaching things differently this year and treating your wellbeing as a business asset! Let’s look at 5 ways to shift our focus to protecting and optimising our wellbeing in 2026.

1. Manage your energy, not just your time.

All of us work differently and you will notice when your focus is naturally strongest. For some people, this is first thing in the morning, for others it might be later in the day. Whatever it is for you, notice when that is, and schedule high-value work during those windows. Protecting your cognitive energy in this way leads to better decision making and fewer mistakes.

2. Create clear boundaries between work and recovery.

Without intentional boundaries, work expands into every available moment. Have you ever felt like your business consumes all your mental space? Creating small rituals, like a defined start and finish to your day can help your nervous system reset and prevent burnout. This may also include:

  • getting changed out of work clothes into more relaxed clothes
  • turning off your computer
  • not checking emails after a certain time.

These don’t have to be big changes, it’s about being intentional.

3. Reduce cognitive load wherever possible.

Decision fatigue is real. As a business owner, the responsibility for decisions falls to you. Through streamlining processes, documenting repeatable tasks and automating what you can, you are reducing the number of everyday decisions you are required to make. This creates more space for strategic thinking. Think about where you might be able to create change in this area.

4. Build regular recovery into your week.

Recovery isn’t a reward for finishing everything, it’s a requirement for being able to show up consistently. Short breaks, movement and genuine rest improve focus and emotional resilience. What recovery do you have scheduled? This includes a lunch break, moving your body, eating and sleeping well. By incorporating this into your daily schedule, you create more sustainability and increased resilience to cope with difficulties in your business.

5. Lead yourself as intentionally as you lead your business.

Self-leadership means noticing stress signals early, adjusting expectations and seeking support when needed. Sustainable growth comes from a regulated, supported business owner—not constant self-pressure. What are your warning signs? Things like interrupted sleep, being more irritable, and not doing things you normally enjoy. If you notice these in yourself, it’s time to reach out for support.

Prioritising your wellbeing and creating an environment where this becomes part of your everyday, is creating a solid foundation for your business.
