On 1 July 2022, a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Rebate Scheme (the Scheme) commenced in Queensland to support greater electric vehicle (EV) update.

Building on the eligibility criteria established within the initial Scheme, I am pleased to advise that several enhancements have been made and are now in place. These enhancements will help ensure even moreQueenslanders and Queensland businesses are able to access an even greater range of ZEVs. These changes include:

• An increase to the eligible dutiable value threshold from $58,000 to $68,000 (including GST).
• An increase to the rebate from $3000 to $6000 for eligible households with a total taxable household income of $180,000 per year.
• Applicants who have already applied and received a $3000 rebate and who are under the total taxable household income threshold, are eligible for reassessment and additional payment of $3000 rebate (totalling $6000 per eligible application).

Please note Queensland households who earn over the $180,000 threshold, in addition to Queensland businesses, remain eligible to claim a $3000 rebate, if all other eligibility requirements are met.  Businesses can claim up to five rebates per financial year for eligible new vehicles up to the dutiable value of $68,000 (including GST).

These enhanced measures result in a range of benefits including actively addressing community and industry feedback, providing more consumer and business choice, driving down emissions, aligning with similar schemes in other Australian jurisdictions and protecting the Queensland lifestyle.

So, what has prompted these changes? Since the initial ZEV Rebate Scheme commenced on 1 July 2022, a range of factors contributed to increased ZEV prices including geo-political uncertainty; interest rate and inflation rises; and ongoing global and domestic supply chain issues. The Queensland Government is aware of these cost-of-living pressures on Queenslanders and continues to drive action to support Queenslanders during these challenging economic times.

With these enhanced measures now available, the Queensland Government is able to further reduce the upfront purchase price of new eligible ZEVs, ensuring they are affordable for even more Queenslanders. The ZEV rebate targets light passenger and light commercial vehicles as these are the largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions within Queensland’s transport sector.

These changes will further support Queensland’s Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy 2022­2032 (ZEV Strategy) and Zero Emission Vehicle Action Plan 2022-2024. The ZEV Strategy is an important part of continuing to transition Queensland to a future with a range of opportunities as we move to zero net emissions by 2050. It sets the path for a cleaner, greener transport future, while making sure our energy network can support the increased use of zero emission vehicles.
