Wide Bay Burnett State of the Region
Monday, 03 November 2014 10:57

Wide Bay Burnett State of the Region Report

On behalf of the region, Regional Development Australia Wide Bay Burnett (RDA WBB) commissioned the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR) to produce an independent Wide Bay Burnett State of the Region Report to add to the region’s understanding of current economic trends and future economic scenarios. Initial feedback on this work was provided by Executive Director Dr Peter Brain at the Wide Bay Burnett State of the Region Conference held earlier this year.

The Report which can be accessed on the RDA WBB web site www.rdawidebayburnett.org.au clearly indicates that our region continues to have challenges. It is well known within the region that deepening and diversifying the industrial base as well as investment in pertinent infrastructure by government will assist greatly in driving job creation and regional income.

RDA WBB trusts the Report and its analysis and presentation of comprehensive statistical data will be a valuable reference for regional organisations.

QLD Apprenticeship Pledge

Department of Education, Training and Employment - Queensland Apprenticeship Pledge

Please see below information regarding a new initiative of the Queensland Government, titled the ‘Queensland Apprenticeship Pledge’.

Under the Pledge, the Government invites individual employers to ‘make a pledge’ to employ additional apprentices.  Eligible employers can receive an incentive of up to $6000 for each additional apprentice they employ and train.  Only employers that make a pledge are eligible to receive the incentive payments up to the number of additional apprentices pledged.

The incentive is paid in two stages:

  • $4000 paid in October 2015
  • $2000 paid in October 2016.

The incentive will apply to eligible apprenticeships commenced from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015.

Employer benchmarks are based on additional apprentices employed and retained compared to a baseline as at 30 June 2014 (excluding school-based apprentices and apprentice re-commencements).

The Fact Sheet can be found at the link below –

Procurement Opportunities - Commonwealth Games

Procurement opportunities for business for 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games

Information from Deb Frecklington - Member for Nanango

The excitement of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games provides an opportunity to remind us of the size and scale of these events. In less than 4 years, our state will be on show with the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

As the largest sporting event in Australia in a decade, the Commonwealth Games will provide significant opportunities for suppliers and contractors to get involved. We are committed to equipping you with the tools to maximise your chance to secure work on this huge project.

Earlier this year, the State Government released the 2018 Commonwealth Games Forward Procurement Framework and Schedule. This schedule outlines every planned procurement opportunity.

On top of this, potential suppliers can now visit the one stop shop for GC2018 business opportunities at Business and Industry Portal (www.business.qld.gov.au) to access:

the Forward Procurement Plan and Schedule for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™

  • links to the Industry Capability Network (ICN) Queensland Gateway to register and express your interest in the relevant categories
  • links to Queensland Government QTenders to obtain a logon for tender opportunities
  • tools, tips and training to help develop and submit tenders
  • calendar of business events.

I would encourage local businesses to consider investigating this opportunity.

Dear Local Business Owners,
RE: New Resource Code to benefit local Businesses
Recently the State Government announced a new code of practice which I believe will be of great benefit for local industry suppliers to the resource sector.
The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has introduced a ‘Local Content Code of Practice’ for resources and energy projects to take effect immediately.
This means local industry will have full, fair and reasonable access in all aspects of major resource projects. Specifically, the Code asks developers of major resource projects to adopt practical local content strategies to ensure local suppliers are involved in major project opportunities.
I would encourage you to become familiar with the new Code to ensure your business is making the most of this great opportunity.
To read a full a copy of the new Code, go to https://www.qrc.org.au/01_cms/details.asp?ID=3209
Kind regards
